About the Novel
This site is the companion to Vacant Possession, a novel about Jagdish Wagh, a fictional builder from Dombivli. It documents the people, projects, organizations and places of that story as a structured reference work rather than a promotional site. Jagdish Wagh does not exist: he, his family, his firms and every project attributed to him were invented for the novel. Real places such as Dombivli appear as settings, but the events set in them are fiction. This page explains the scope of the companion, how its entries are organized, and the editorial rules that keep the entries consistent with one another as the universe grows.
What is invented, and what isn’t
Dombivli is real. So is the CKP community, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and the practice of redevelopment that drives the plot. Everything else on this site was made up for a book: Jagdish Wagh, his family, his firm, every project attributed to him, and every date in the timeline. Shivaji Chowk and the plot the novel calls Site 14 do not exist. No living builder is described or implied.
We say this here, in the footer of every page, and again in the answer at the top of any entry a search engine might read literally. A reference work that reads like a record has an obligation to be clear about which one it is.
Why the novel needs one
The story covers fifty-one years and three generations of the same family working the same ground. It expects you to remember which plot he refused in 1991 when he takes it in 2008, and what was said at a society meeting three chapters before the contract was signed.
You can hold that in your head, or you can look it up. This site is for looking it up.
How entries work
Every page belongs to one section — characters, projects, places, organizations, timeline, glossary, themes — and answers one question in its opening paragraph, before any background. Open an entry mid-chapter, get your answer, get back to the book.
Editorial rules
Neutral register. No promotion. Nothing contradicts established canon, and where the novel is silent, the entry says so rather than filling the gap — three of those gaps are deliberate and will stay open.
